Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, was established over a thousand years ago and developed around the Red River. Its Old Quarter, shaped during the Ly and Tran dynasties, became a hub of commerce and craft. Nearby, Ninh Binh, with its karst mountains and ancient temples, served as the cradle of early Vietnamese kingdoms and was once the capital of Dai Co Viet in the 10th century.
To the east, Halong Bay, formed over millions of years, became a legendary seascape marked by towering limestone pillars. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the bay, once inhabited by fishing communities, has transformed into a symbol of Vietnam’s natural heritage.
Further south, Danang emerged as a strategic port during the Cham period and later as a colonial outpost. Close by, Ba Na Hills, established by the French in the early 20th century, became a retreat from coastal heat. Today, its Golden Bridge, supported by stone hands, draws travelers into a surreal mountain setting.
The countryside village of Cam Thanh, bordered by coconut forests, supported traditional fishing communities for generations. Adjacent Hoi An, a well-preserved trading port from the 15th century, flourished with cultural exchanges between Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and European merchants.
In the south, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, rapidly expanded during the French colonial era and later became central to modern Vietnam’s economic life. Just outside the city, the Cu Chi Tunnels, dug during wartime, formed a vast underground network, once hidden beneath dense jungle, now preserved as a powerful reminder of resistance and resilience.
